The Lloyd Epilog: Activities Since the 2017 Round-The-World flight.
4 September 2017 – Texas, USA. Hurricane Harvey flooding relief flights.
Here are some pictures from the little bit of hurricane relief I did from the last two days. I ended up going to Beaumont two times. This time I have included some photos of the flooded areas that I flew over.
Yesterday’s run they said they needed food, not water. We loaded as much as we could fit into Spirit and then were off. Faye was with me in the plane this time and took the photos of the flood area around Beaumont and Port Arthur.
Hurricane Harvey is a disaster on the same order of magnitude as Katrina. The hardest hit areas are east of Houston, in Beaumont and Port Arthur. The drop-off point at Jack Brooks Regional Airport in Beaumont was itself partly under water a few days ago. A national guard unit is there unloading and distributing relief supplies by truck and helicopter where ground vehicles can’t get in. There was a steady stream of aircraft, large and small, dropping off supplies. These men and women are working in miserable conditions but they all smiled, shook my hand, and said, “Thank you.”
I am taking a day off [4 Sep 2017] but will continue doing what I can tomorrow or the next day.

There is always something to do when flying. With the flooding from Hurricane Harvey there are a lot of displaced people in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area of Texas. Stuff just can’t get it on the flooded roads. So I carried water. It won’t make a big difference but I can’t help but think that a lot of little deliveries will eventually make a significant dent in the need.
I’ll be flying more supplies tomorrow.
Eric Dey: You switched back to your new prop.
I did. It doesn’t work quite as well as the old prop by about 2kts but it is lighter, quieter, and less vibration.
